The news of Chilean innovation has made full circle in Northern California with the announcement of a one-of-a-kind event highlighting the current state of Chilean Biotechnology that will take place in San Francisco.
The University of California, San Francisco will host the esteemed and prolific Chilean biochemist, Dr. Pablo Valenzuela, at an event on September 14th, 2010 at 1:30 in the afternoon in Byers Hall 212.
Dr. Valenzuela, who earned his PhD in biochemistry from Northwestern University, will give attendants a talk regarding the current state of biotechnology in Chile, in which he has many years of prestigious experience. Currently, he is a professor of Biochemistry at the Universidad Andres Bello in Santiago while at the same time overseeing various biotech related companies he has founded.
He is the founder of Chiron Corporation, a major biotech company that was eventually acquired by Novartis AG, as well as the Chilean companies Bios-Chile Ingeniería Genetica SA (Genetic Engineering), Austral Biologicals, and Algisa SA. Not only is he a biotech business man, but a philanthropist having created the Fundación Sciencia para la Vida (Science for Life Foundation), a private non-profit organization promoting the adoption and use of science based innovation by Chilean companies.
